Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Technology Improves Chances for a Successful Pregnancy.

What is PGD?

PGD (i.e. PGS in some countries) is a reproductive technique developed in order to allow embryos to be analyzed  for serious genetically determined diseases. Some of inheritable diseases may be related to the embryo's gender.

PGD (Preimplantation Genetics Diagnosis) significantly increases the rate of a successful pregnancy. PGD testing can be performed to select embryos, which are free of genetic abnormalities. Cells are removed from the early embryos at eight-cell stage for genetic analysis and, if the embryos are free of the disorder, they are then implanted into the mother's womb. PGD does not appear to modify embryos’ subsequent evolution.

Indications for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis.

PGD test is generally recommended for woman over 35 years of age because the possibility of chromosomal abnormalities is higher in aged women. Also, PGD is being used for other controversial reason. Genetic diagnosis allows to take an embryo that is an immunological match for a sick sibling, to determine the sex of an embryo for gender preference, and to test embryos with genes correlated with adult onset diseases such as Huntington's, Alzheimer’s, heart disease or risk of developing hereditary breast cancer.

         Common candidates for PGD are:

  •   Women over 35 years of age.
  • Couples with unexplained infertility or repeated pregnancy loss.
  •  Couples with repeated unsuccessful IVF cycles.
  • Male person with genuine male factor fertility problem.

Sex Selection during PGD.

Gender selection can also be done under the family balancing concept. The laws in Ukraine allow the sex selection procedure. Couples who have at least one child are eligible for gender selection procedure of their new child.
