IVF. In Vitro Fertilization
What is IVF?In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) in which mature eggs removed from a woman's ovary after the ovaries have been artificially stimulated, eggs joined with sperm cells from a man in vitro (in the lab) and then the embryos are transferred into the patient's uterus. Thereafter pregnancy is allowed to begin.
How is IVF Done? The IVF process is a combination of five steps that may go on across 20 – 25 days.

Ovulation Induction. The use of fertility drugs triggers super ovulation thereby allowing a greater number of embryos to develop and helped in increasing the success rates of the IVF procedure.
Eggs Retrieval. The eggs are retrieved using sonographic technique. A special needle is connected to an internal ultrasonography probe, which is inserted into the vagina. During sonography screening, the embryologist locates the ovarian follicles. He punctures each follicle with a needle, and a gentle suction is used to extract the egg and fluid within the vesicular ovarian follicle. An embryologist evaluates the liquid and finds the egg.
Collecting and preparing the sperm.Sperm is also taken from the partner or donor. Semen analysed using “'sperm penetration assays”, where some semen is checked to determine whether it can deflate a zone-stripped hamster egg.
Insemination of eggs and embryos culture. The egg and spermatozoon should fertilise in the traditional way in this media. If normal fertilization is not possible, some other ART technique such as ICSI (throwing in the spermatozoon straight into the egg using intro cytoplasmic sperm injection) - may be applied. They are then passed to a maturation culture medium. It takes approximately 40 hours until the eggs have convert to pre-embryos.
Transferring embryos to the uterus (embryo transfer).
Until recently, fertilized egg were cultivated for 72 hours and then transposed to the womb or cryo-preserved (frozen). Nowadays at Fertility clinic Nadiya, we have the ability to develop the embryos for one week until they reach the blastocyst phase. For some women, these blastocysts may have a greater chance of implantation. While increasing the chance of pregnancy, blastocyst transfer allowing us to transfer only one or two embryos and reduce a risk of multiple births.
