Ukraine (pronounced in Ukrainian UKRAYINA) is a country in south-eastern Europe, the second largest of the continent after Russia, and of the most populous in Europe (47 million). Its history spans more than a thousand years. The Land of Cossacks, ancient culture, traditions and unique historical and architectural monuments for several centuries it had stayed under Russia’s domination and regained independence in 1991.

Ukraine occupies an area of 603,700 square kilometres, and is among the largest European countries. Territorially it is larger than France (544,000 sq. km.), Spain, Sweden and Poland.
In terms of population, Ukraine ranks fifth in Europe after Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Italy. In its ethnic composition, Ukraine is a multi-ethnic Republic, inhabited by more than 110 ethnic groups.
Climate: temperate continental Mediterranean only on the southern Crimean coast precipitation disproportionately distributed, highest in west and north, lesser in east and southeast winters vary from cool along the Black Sea to cold farther inland summers are warm across the greater part of the country, hot in the south. The temperature is highest in July/August and lowest in winter when it often falls below freezing.
