"I've checked the food links, but everyone appears interested in restaurants....
One of the best kept secrets where most locals eat are cafeteria-style eateries. Don't freak out - it's nothing like our hospital cafeterias in USA.
I recommend:
Domashnya Kuhnia - there's one near the Opera house. Great choice of hot and cold foods - for a feast we paid approximately the same as a McDonalds meal at home.
or
Poosata Hata - there is one on Khreschatyk. This one's a little more upscale, but still easily rings in at under $10 US/meal./
Some delicious examples:
Borchst (the usual beet variety, as well as a cool summer version with cucumbers and dill - crazy good)
Veal meatballs in tomato sauce
ALL varieties of Varenyky/ Perohy - I still crave the cherry ones (vishnaya in Ukrainian)
Dessert section with European tortes
Don't worry about not speaking Ukrainian - pointing works really well. "
