Endodontics FAQ
How is root canal treatment performed?
After the tooth is anesthetized, an opening is made through the crown into the pulp chamber, and then your root canal is cleaned and shaped. Unhealthy pulp is removed. The length of the root canals is determined and is filled with dental material such as Gutta-percha and maybe covered with a temporary filling. A post supports your tooth or to retain the restorative materials. The tooth is sealed with a temporary filling. Usually a crown adds further protection to it after the treatment.
Why is root canal treatment needed?
If a patient’s tooth pulp becomes irritated, bacteria will begin to grow within the tooth. This growth results in pressure and causes pain as well as possible facial swelling to the patient. If a Root Canal is not performed, eventually bacteria will destroy the pulp. The bone structure around the tooth will then become infected and will inevitably lead to tooth loss
Does it hurt? No. A local anaesthetic is used and it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling done.
What about aftercare?
Root-treated teeth should be treated just the same as any other tooth. Remember to clean your teeth at least twice a day, preferably with a fluoride toothpaste. Cut down on sugary snacks, and keep them only to mealtimes if possible.
